Facebook gives members a vote

Facebook has announced that it will be giving members the right to vote on how the social network is run.

The deal is based on a valuation that estimates Facebook's worth as $15bn

Social-networking website Facebook is to give members a greater say in how the site is run.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg told members that he wanted to offer "a greater opportunity to voice your opinion over how Facebook is governed".

"I've been excited to see how much people care about Facebook and how willing they are to contribute to the process of governing the site," said Zuckerberg.

One of the first things that members will be able to debate are a Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, which will replace the existing Terms of Use.

Facebook is trying to draw a line under the controversy caused by a recent change to the site's Terms of Use, which was later overturned.

Privacy campaigners had said that the changes, if they had gone through, would have given Facebook the right to display pictures and content without the member's permission.

"History tells us that systems are most fairly governed when there is an open and transparent dialogue between the people who make decisions and those who are affected by them," Zuckerberg said.
