Flickr offers video uploads to all

Flickr has thrown down the gauntlet to YouTube by offering video uploads to all its members.

Web User: Flickr adds 3 billionth photo

Flickr, the photo-sharing website, has stepped up its challenge to YouTube by letting all members to upload video snippets.

The Yahoo-owned site introduced a facilitiy to let Pro members, who pay £17.70 per month, upload 90-second video clips last year.

"We are continuing to evolve the video experience to make it more compelling, accessible and easy to use," Flickr general manager Kakul Srivastava wrote in a post on the firm's website.

Video length remains capped at 90 seconds but now Pro members also have the option to upload high-definition videos.

Members with free accounts can now upload up to two videos per month. YouTube does not restrict the number of videos members can upload.

Flickr was launched in 2004 and has since registered more than 35 million users with more than three billion photos uploaded.

Earlier this week Flickr also introduced the Flickr Clock which organises videos into a collage based on the time they were uploaded, allowing people to see "what's happening at any given minute around the world".
