SIM-free iPhones are now available to buy in the UK on the Play.com website.
Though the site says the item is currently out of stock, it is taking orders and promises to send the SIM-free iPhone to buyers as soon as it is back in stock.
The price is steep, though, at £599.99 for the 16GB version. However, Play.com claims this is a discount on the RRP which is £649.99.
"It is not unlocked from a UK or European network and is available due to EU legislation ensuring the sale of SIM-free mobile phones," the product details of the item read.
The iPhone has previously only been available in the UK through network operator O2.
Apple declined to comment on the availability of the SIM-free iPhone in the UK.
"O2 offers iPhone customers a full service which includes specially trained customer service, number one customer satisfaction, unlimited UK data downloads and unlimited Wi-Fi access, visual voicemail, and a range of other benefits, which you may not get from an unlocked handset," O2 said in a statement.
The company recently revamped its pricing structure, offering the 8GB model for free if you are prepared to sign up to a £35-per-month, 24-month contract.
The 16GB version of the iPhone is free through O2 to anyone willing to commit to a two-year, £45-per-month contract.
The iPhone was launched in the summer of 2007 in the US and came to the UK in November 2007.
Initially, customers were asked to sign 18-month contracts, so early adopters will be coming to the end of this period soon.
