If you are a Vodafone customer you can now keep up to date with Twitter for free via your mobile phone.

Vodafone customers will be able to receive text messages from people they choose to follow via SMS on Twitter and send text message 'tweets' to the code 86444.

What is Twitter?

However, Vodafone said the text service would only be free "for a limited period" and would be included in customers' bundles in a few weeks time.

Keeping up to date with Twitter via text used to be an option for all members of the micro-blogging site, though Twitter ended this service in August last year.

Twitter tools and applications - brilliant and free!!

"We are delighted to be the only operator in the UK today to offer Twitter on SMS to our customers," said Al Russell, head of internet services at Vodafone UK.

Twitter was positive that many Vodafone customers would be keen to sign up.

"Twitter is the messaging network you didn't know you needed until you experience it over SMS," Kevin Thau of Twitter said.
