Celebrate Earth Hour online

Earth Hour will take place in the UK at 2030GMT on Saturday to highlight the problems of climate change. Surfers are encouraged to turn off their lights and electrical equipment for one hour and the event will be marked around the world. Organisers are hoping that as many as one billion people will take part and are asking surfers to upload their own videos and photographs to the Earth Hour website illustrating how they celebrated the event. You can also use Twitter to tweet about the event, and are encouraged to use 'hashtags' such as #earthhour or #voteearth. What is Twitter? Earth Hour began in 2007, when many inhabitants of Sydney turned out their lights for an hour. In 2008 around 50 million people around the world switched off their lights and landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and the Colosseum in Rome all stood in darkness. This year 2,398 cities and towns in 83 countries have committed to Earth Hour. RIM has launched a special Earth Hour mobile site to mark 2009's event.
