Members of micro-blogging site Twitter will be limited to just one 'tweet' per day in plans to stop the internet reaching saturation point.

Other social networks will also be restricted under new proposals, with Facebook expected to close accounts belonging to anyone under the age of 40.

What is Twitter?

While no exact date has been given as to when the internet would reach its capacity, experts predict that unless drastic measures to limit surfers' activities are taken, it could happen quite soon.

"We need to stop thinking of the internet as an invisible, infinitesimal space and need to start looking at it like a sponge," said Polly Fordasia, a web metrics expert.

"A sponge can only absorb so much before it becomes full and ineffectual; this is the risk we run if we overload the internet," Fordasia added.

Blogs could also be limited to one per family and YouTube videos may be restricted to just seven seconds each as further measures to stop the web filling up.

Fordasia believes that the internet was oversubscribed to begin with and said that older surfers as well as school children are only adding to the problem.
