Twitter membership numbers have surpassed the 14 million mark, according to statistics from web-monitoring firm comScore. In the space of one month Twitter grew by more than 76 per cent as the popularity of the micro-blogging website shows no sign of slowing. The service has been helped by celebrity endorsements and a huge media profile, but has yet to make any money for its founders, Biz Stone and Evan Williams. Free Twitter tools and applications Interestingly, statistics reveal that Twitter is not exclusively a youth fad, as the majority of the 10 million US Twitter users are over 35. According to comScore, roughly the same percentage of Twitterers, 10 per cent, were between 55 and 64, nearly the same amount as those aged between 18 and 24. Follow celebrities on Twitter "The skew towards older visitors, although perhaps initially surprising for a social-media site, actually makes more sense than you might think at first," wrote Sarah Radwanick on the comScore blog. "With so many businesses using Twitter, along with the first generations of internet users 'growing up' and comfortable with technology, this is a sign that the traditional early adopter model might need to be revisited," added Radwanick. Hitwise, a web-metrics firm, announced this week that Twitter climbed into the top 50 most-visited websites in the UK for the first time.
