The BBC is to offer programmes in high definition (HD) through its online catch-up service, the iPlayer. Not all programmes will be available in HD, though it isn't just restricted to downloads and will be available to surfers streaming content as well. Doctor Who and Dragons' Den are two of the programmes that will be available in HD. The iPlayer will also have an updated speed-diagnosis tool, which can tell how fast your broadband connection is and automatically adjust itself to give you the best possible viewing experience. The new version of iPlayer Desktop software is to be fully released too, the BBC said. The iPlayer has proved to be a controversial service with many criticising the lack of support for any platforms other than Windows when it first launched. Back in December 2008, the corporation announced Mac and Linux support on the iPlayer for the first time. Catch-up rival 4oD has also recently introduced support for Mac and Linux.
