Kutcher beats CNN in Twitter race

Ashton Kutcher has beaten CNN's Breaking News team to be the first Twitter member to have a million followers. The actor, or @plusk as he is called on Twitter, challenged the American news network to a popularity contest saying he would donate 10,000 mosquito nets to charity in time for World Malaria Day if he won the race. Follow celebrities on Twitter CNN accepted the challenge and said it would match his offer. The Twitter race was the result of an interview Kutcher had with Larry King in which the actor said he "found it astonishing that one person can actually have as big of a voice online as what an entire media company can on Twitter". Stream videos at Ustream Kutcher passed the million mark early on Friday morning UK time; he now has more than 1,013,000 followers. CNN Breaking News crashed through barrier half an hour later. Kutcher posted a tweet to his million-plus followers declaring: "You guys are amazing." Free Twitter tools and applications CNN offered Kutcher a congratulatory tweet: "Congrats @aplusk. Ashton Kutcher is the first Twitter account to reach 1m followers." Of the top three most popular accounts on Twitter two are celebrities, Kutcher and Britney Spears while the other is CNN's Breaking News. Spears has nearly 960,000 followers. Stephen Fry has a mere 421,000 in comparison.
