The annual Earth Day celebrations take place today and the focus is firmly on climate change concerns. Earth Day, which began in 1970 in the US, is designed to raise awareness and appreciation about the natural environment. Earth Day facts The event is now celebrated worldwide with groups such as Greenpeace and the Earth Day Network using it as a platform to focus on environmental issues. The Earth Day Network website is running a 'Billion Acts of Green' initiative where people are invited to register the details of what 'green' activity they will commit to, from recycling to planting a tree. Nasa, the American space agency, is celebrating Earth Day with a gallery of shots of the Earth taken from satellites and space ships. Included in the gallery are shots of The Great Wall of China and Hurricane Katrina as well as the first photo of Earth from the weather satellite TIROS-1 taken in 1960. Earth Day was founded by US Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970 to shake up the political establishment and force the environment onto the national agenda. Best Google Earth extras
