Cumbria earthquake reported on Twitter

An earthquake that struck Cumbria on Tuesday morning was first reported on Twitter.

Reports starting coming in a little after 1100BST on Tuesday that there had been an earthquake.

What is Twitter?

The first inkling that the earth had moved came from the micro-blogging website, with one person 'tweeting': "Was that an #earthquake?"

Twitter was soon full of posts about the 'quake, which measured 3.7 on the Richter scale and centred on the town of Ulverston.

"Earthquake!! I was revising at the time and have my own little seismic graph across my notes!" one Twitterer wrote.

"Bonkers mate!! Not felt one like that for a while!!" wrote another.

The British Geological Survey website is currently very slow, presumably due to the weight of traffic.
