Apple has issued new versions of iTunes and QuickTime to fix vulnerabilities in older versions of the software.

Security vulnerabilities in Apple's iTunes and QuickTime software have been fixed in updates of both programs.

iTunes 8.2 and QuickTime 7.6.2 can be downloaded by opening iTunes, clicking on Help and selecting 'Check for Updates' from the drop-down menu.

"For the protection of our customers, Apple does not disclose, discuss, or confirm security issues until a full investigation has occurred and any necessary patches or releases are available," a statement on the Apple website reads.

Graham Cluley of security firm Sophos said the QuickTime vulnerability could let hackers take control of a computer by creating a "booby-trapped movie or audio file".

The iTunes flaw could have let hackers take remote control of a PC or Mac if a surfer could be convinced to click on a specially created link.

Cluley said it was vital for all iTunes and QuickTime users to ensure their software was up to date.

"It's worth pointing out that the updates for iTunes and QuickTime are not just for Mac users, but also for PC owners running Windows Vista, Windows XP Service Pack 2 and later," said Cluley.

Mac malware has become more common in recent months, according to security experts.
