An interface designed for larger screens has been launched by YouTube to let surfers watch videos on the site on TV sets.

YouTube has announced the launch of an interface designed for use on large screens.

YouTube XL is similar to a feature added to the PS3 and Nintendo Wii platforms in January 2009 and will enable viewing on large monitors as well as TV screens.

A spokesperson for Google, YouTube's owner, said: "Just as there’s a YouTube browser for mobile devices, the new YouTube XL is optimised for watching YouTube videos on any large screen."

The YouTube interface has been redesigned to make it more attractive on the large screen, with features such as suggested videos and comments removed on the XL version.

There is also a continuous play feature, so users can search for a topic on YouTube and press play once to watch all the videos on that topic in sequence.

Video controls in YouTube XL are compatible with universal remote controls, as well as the new 'Gmote' application on Android phones.
