Follow European elections online

Europe goes to the polls today and you can get information about the parties, policies and political implications of the vote online.

The European elections open for voting in the UK on Thursday, with a variety of online platforms to help you decide who to vote for.

Thursday’s votes will determine which party will stand for the country in European parliament.

A communication campaign is currently taking place on several online platforms including Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, YouTube, the European Parliament website and EuroParlTV – a webcasting platform set up by the EU parliament.

Although the elections are well supported online, online voting is currently not available in the UK. Previous trials of e-voting have been heavily criticised.

Despite a European Parliament poll finding that 30 per cent of voters would vote online, with a further 18 per cent agreeing to vote online if safety was guaranteed, only Estonia currently has an online voting system.

For those unfamiliar with the parties and their policies, two sites have been set up to match voters beliefs with the parties’ policies.

Vote Match and EU Profiler suggest which party to vote for based on a series of policy questions.
