Digital Britain 2Mbps limit 'too slow'

A poll on the eve of the publication of the Digital Britain report reveals that a 2Mbps internet service is 'too slow'.

Mobile broadband connections compared

Nine out of 10 Brits think that a 2Mbps broadband connection is too slow, a report has revealed.

Lord Stephen Carter is expected to set 2Mbps as the minimum broadband speed everyone in the UK must receive by 2012 in his Digital Britain report this week.

But according to a survey from Moneysupermarket.com, consumers say 2Mbps is not enough for downloading video and watching programmes on services such as YouTube and the BBC's iPlayer.

Eight out of 10 quizzed for the survey also said that the 2Mbps speed is not sufficient for online gaming, using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services including Skype or for downloading music.

The final version of the Digital Britain report, drawn up by Lord Carter, the communications minister, will be published in full tomorrow.

One of the most eagerly awaited points is the government's plans to modernise the digital infrastructure and how it intends to implement universal broadband.

A separate poll from uSwitch.com recently revealed that nearly half of all Brits are unhappy with the broadband speeds they receive.
