Free Sainsbury's vouchers email hoax October 13, 2005 Claire Woffenden
An email chain letter which claims supermarket Sainsbury's is offering free gift vouchers to shoppers is spreading among internet users.
The hoax email says the supermarket is giving away £60 gift vouchers as part of an "exciting new marketing method".
It states: "Yes you read it right, Free gift vouchers, no catch. All you have to do is forward this email on to 10 friends and a copy to j.sainsburys @ customerservices.com, simple as that. Once everyone in your list has sent 10 emails you will be emailed your £60 voucher which you can exchange in all Sainsbury's stores."
A spokeswoman for Sainsbury's has confirmed that the email is a hoax and does not originate from the supermarket.
Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for email security company Sophos, said: "Chain letters like this have a life of their own - good natured users of the internet pass them on to each other in the distant hope that they may be true."
"The fact is that they're a waste of not only time, but also of email bandwidth. Passing the message on only serves to give a twisted kick to the person who started it."
