Cybercriminals are attempting to con Barclays' customers into giving away their account details in a new email scam.

The emails, which target users of Barclays' PINsentry, ask the recipient to open an attachment and enter their account details, claiming that the security protection being used by the device needs upgrading.

"To help protect your account from Online fraud, we are changing the security for Barclays Online Banking and you will need to upgrade to PINsentry," the emails read.

However, the criminals behind the email are attempting to get hold of bank details to use in phishing attacks.

"Note that it asks you for absolutely everything, including your telephone banking passcode. Barclays Bank do not send these kinds of emails to their customers, so be on your guard," said Christopher Boyd of FaceTime Security.
