Pinnacle Systems has said that the UK's damp climate provides perfect conditions for the mould, which leaves a fine white dust on VHS tapes stored in cupboards.

The company recommended converting the VHS footage into digital formats so its safety could be ensured.

Matt Cox of Pinnacle Systems said: "We all have those memories we want to hold on to – the memories that we want to be able to look back on whenever we can. But if you're wanting to keep them safe and watchable, you'll need to back up onto a digital format quickly!"
