The BBC must implement new financial controls to govern the way its website is run before it can invest further in bbc.co.uk.
The BBC Trust today approved proposals for a new system of management controls that should ensure that no further funds are "misallocated", after £110m was spent on the site in the last year.
The proposals include the appointment of a new Group Controller for bbc.co.uk who will have "overall accountability and responsibility for the service licence", according to the BBC Trust.
A new plan of action from the BBC had been requested by the BBC Trust, which effectively fills the same role as the BBC's Board of Directors used to, as "a pre-requisite for its consideration of any new investment in bbc.co.uk".
At the end of May the BBC Trust had criticised bbc.co.uk for offering a full web search facility and said that navigation around the site could be improved.
