After beating Russia in the group stage, the Spanish team's form faultered slightly and they were unable to break down an unadventurous Italian side in the quarter finals, progressing after a penalty shoot-out.

Russia, on the other hand, keep on improving and outplayed a classy Dutch side in their quarter final.

The teams were playing for a place in the final where they will face Germany, who beat Turkey 3-2 on Wednesday in Basel despite being comprehensively outplayed.
