The Pirate Bay hit by $100m action
May 19, 2008
Web User

Pirate The Websheriff - also known as John Giacobbi - has announced plans to sue file-sharing website The Pirate Bay in both Sweden and the US.

Giacobbi is taking action on behalf of artists such as Michael Jackson and UB40, as well as The Village People, and wants to extract $100m from the Swedish site for alleged copyright infringements.

The plans were first announced back in February but Web Sheriff didn't initially specify a figure. Giacobbi has also been attempting to get Seventies group ABBA on board "as they personify the Swedish music industry's successes".

The Pirate Bay's response to Web Sheriff's announcement was typically indignant.

"Most of us civilized people understand that people cannot be sued outside their own domicile - we cannot be sued outside of Sweden. So good luck with that. It proves that the sheriff is just after making some headlines!" read a message on The Pirate Bay's blog.

Back in January, four individuals involved in The Pirate Bay faced a lawsuit from Swedish prosecutors, who filed charges of preparing and participating in copyright infringement.

The Pirate Bay hit back by accusing Swedish police of a smear campaign against them.
