The broadcaster was awarded Best Music Website for its BBC Radio 1 Meet the DJs site and won the top honour, Best Radio Website, for its BBC World Service channel site.

It also scooped the People's Voice prize in the news category with its BBC News website.

The Webby Awards, which honour excellence on the internet, are run by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences and are judged by a panel of 550.

Other winners on the night included US satirist Stephen Colbert, who was bestowed with the internet's Person of the Year gong.

Relatively unknown on this side of the Atlantic, Colbert is one of the leading pundits on the forthcoming presidential election and hosts The Colbert Report on Comedy Central.

He was selected for an award for "the innovative way he has used the internet to interact with fans of The Colbert Report".

The Post Secret blog, which lets surfers post secrets on the net anonymously, won Best Cultural/Personal Blog.

Other winners on the night included NYTimes.com, satirical newspaper The Onion and photo- and video-sharing site Flickr, for best social-networking site.

One other British site that was honoured was Transport for London (TfL), though this was in the government category rather than comedy.
