The most important factor defining a broadband customer's satisfaction with a service is the speed of the connection, according to research.
Top 10 Broadband carried out 90,000 speed tests in March of this year and found that the three ISPs with the fasters connection speed also had the highest proportion of satisfied customers.
O2, Be Broadband and Virgin Media had the highest levels of customer satisfaction.
The average speed of an O2 connection was 6.41Mbps, 5.55Mbps was average for Be and 4.18Mbps was the average speed achieved on a Virgin Media Line.
At the bottom of the pile for speed was Tesco, with an average of just 1.42Mbps, but the ISP with the least satisfied customers was the Post Office.
"This report sends an indisputable message to broadband providers to speed up or face the wrath of disappointed customers," said Jessica McArdle of Top 10 Broadband.
"BT's planned infrastructure upgrade, which will provide super-fast ADSL2+ download speeds across the UK, starting at the end of the month, cannot come soon enough," McArdle continued.
However, BT's 21st Century Network (21CN) is not due to be completed across the UK until 2012 and many in the industry are calling for a fibre-optic network to be put in place instead.
