Pizza.com makes owner millions April 9, 2008 Web User
A man who paid $20 for the domain name pizza.com 14 years ago has sold it on for $2.6m (around £1.3m).
Chris Clark, an American software company owner, bought the domain name early in his career as he thought it might get him a lucrative contract with a pizza company.
Fourteen years on, Mr Clark is rolling in the dough.
Pizza.com was sold following a week-long auction online. The first bid for $100 was placed on 27 March but by the next morning it was up to $500,000, before surpassing the $2m reserve set by domain specialists Sedo.
The identity of the pizza.com buyer has not been revealed.
"It's crazy, it's just crazy," Mr Clark told the Baltimore Sun after a week's worth of anonymous bids online had netted him the massive profit.
"That amount of money is significant - it will make a significant difference in my life, for sure," he continued.
Mr Clark decided to sell pizza.com after vodka.com was sold for $3m in 2006. The identity of the buyer has not been revealed.
Buying domain names reached a zenith last year when business.com sold for just under £200m to an American business directory service.
