Scrabulous faces removal from Facebook
January 16, 2008
Web User

Scrabulous The popular game Scrabulous, based on the board game Scrabble, could be taken off the Facebook website in a row over copyright.

The rights to the game Scrabble are jointly owned by US-based games companies Mattel and Hasbro.

They have requested that the game be removed from the website, after last year Hasbro issued a cease and desist order against Scrabulous.

The two companies have now said that the game infringes copyright laws.

The move has sparked protests on the Facebook site, with a group called Save Scrabulous numbering more than 29,000 at the time of writing.

One user of the application wrote: "Granted copyrights need to be protected, but the Agarwalla brothers should be rewarded for creating this marvel, not punished!"

The game has nearly 600,000 regular users, and was created by brothers Rajat and Jayant Agarwalla.

Contact details for Mattel and Hasbro executives and customer support departments have been posted on threads on the Facebook group, with some encouraging others to bombard the companies with complaints.

Scrabulous told Web User that it wouldn't comment on legal issues.
