Eclipse puts the rest in the shade
February 16, 2007
Ben Camm-Jones

Eclipse Zen Internet, ntl:Telewest and Tiscali were among the winners of last night's Internet Service Provider's Association (ISPA) awards.

However, the star of the night was Eclipse Internet, which picked up the Best Consumer Broadband award.

"The judges were impressed with Eclipse's... rapid delivery of its broadband services. Of particular note were Eclipse's efforts to provide uncapped broadband,” said an ISPA spokesperson.

Be Broadband was also commended in this category "for pushing the limits of broadband capabilities in a consumer market by being bold and offering up to 24Mbps broadband.”

Zen Internet picked up two gongs, one for the best dial-up service, and the other for the Best Business Email service. Tiscali was deemed to have the Best Portal and ntl:Telewest was judged Best Consumer ISP.

There were also awards for the Heroes and Villains of the internet in 2007. Vodafone's Annie Mullins took the Hero award, “for her work with the Home Office Task Force on Protection of Children on the internet and the European Union's Safer Internet Programme."

The Home Office Task Force was also recognised by the Internet Watch Foundation, an organisation that promotes child safety on the internet.

“The Internet Watch Foundation particularly recognised the Task Force for continuing... to make the Internet a safer place for children.”

The Villain award went to the EU and European Commissioner Vivianne Reading, who beat the US government and the British Phonographic Industry to the booby prize.

“Commissioner Vivianne Reding and the European Commission received the award for foisting the most arcane set of rules yet seen for prior registration of .eu domains," said ISPA.
