No sound on computer

Help Jun 7, 2009

The sound on my computer has stopped working. How can I get it back again?

If you have no sound on your computer, first check your sound isn't muted. Right-click on the speaker icon in the Taskbar and select Open Volume Mixer. Check that none of the individual components or the speakers have been muted. Also, double check that the speaker plug hasn't disconnected from the socket on the back of the PC.

If that doesn't work, try reinstalling the drivers for your sound card. You may have a disk that came with your PC or be able to download driver software from the internet. Right-click on My Computer (just Computer in Vista) and choose Properties. Select the Device Manager and click on the plus next to the sound option.

Among the list that appears will be your sound hardware. Search the web for appropriate drivers. Alternatively, visit the support section of your PC manufacturer's website and download drivers from there.
