My Documents folder

  • Tue, 1 Sep 2009

After my PC has started the My Documents folder pops up just before the start-up programs come on - is this a virus?

The problem isn't a virus (although it was possibly caused by a virus) it's an error in the Registry. Click Start, Run and enter ‘regedit’ (without the quotes).

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon in the left-hand pane and then look on the right for a value called Userinit.

Double-click it and make sure it says ‘C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,’ (make sure it finishes with a comma).
