The Mozilla Service Week is underway and ordinary surfers are invited to demonstrate how the web can be used to make a difference in their communities.
Until 21 September Mozilla, the not-for-profit organisation behind the Firefox browser and Thunderbird email client, is encouraging people to teach senior citizens how to use the web, for example, or help install a wireless network in a school.
"Mozilla believes everyone should know how to use the internet, have easy access to it, and have a good experience when they're online," the company said in a statement.
Web User is helping the charity Find Your Feet make more effective use of social media. Find Your Feet works with people living in poverty in rural India and Malawi.
If you're stuck for inspiration, you can find out about projects in your area on the Idealist website.
