It sounds to me as if you may be exceeding the REN (Ringing Equivalence Number). Any piece of equipment connected to a normal household t/p line will have it's REN marked on it somewhere. The total REN must not exceed 4. That doesn't necessarily mean 4 phones because the REN of one of them might be greater than 1.
