I've got Media Player 9 and ME. No problems. The only thing I can suggest is downloading it again from the Micro$oft update site. If not, I'm sure someone here will be able to help.
An afterthought. You haven't got Real Player open, have you? It's incompatible with Media Player. If you try to use both at the same time, at least one of them will lock up.
