I used to need access to the net whilst in a hotel and as you say, hotel rates are a rip-off. Despite the slow connection and the cost per call I used to use my mobile phone. If you only want your emails then a mobile is probably good enough. You will need a data cable for your phone and you may need to talk to your service supplier to set up data access on your phone.
