Playing sound keeps freezing my laptop!

Hi i need some help. When i turn my computer on the start up sound is working, when i get sent an instant message on yahoo and msn and when i play a track on media player the compouter freezes and i have to turn the laptop off. Can anyone help me please, so frustrating!!!
