PC won't bootup

Afternoon
My kids recently inherented their grandad's old pc and since last week we haven't been able to start it up. We get a message saying: Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM\
It then gives the option to repair using a disc (which we don't have) and selecting repair. Can anyone help?
