Any company that says you shouldn't use automatic updating for windows should be ashamed of themselves. Optional updates are just that, optional the user must decided if they need them or not but I always use automatic updating for the rest.
As regard sp1, I have windows ultimate 32bit edition and installed sp1 with no issues whatsoever, well apart from the long install time, so if you could post what problems your having then maybe an other member of our community will be able to help.
