While we're waiting for the experts, Jane, check that you haven't muted your sound anywhere. Left click on the little speaker icon on the taskbar and make sure there isn't a tick in the "mute" box. Also, open Media player and check that the speaker symbol here has the little lines radiating out from it, or if not, click on it to bring them back.
All basic stuff, I know, but it's always worth checking the obvious before looking at drivers and things like that.
There is intelligent life on Earth, but I'm only visiting.
