I certainly don't class myself as a reliable geek but there's two items which can be contradicted.

I'm with BT Broadband, connection fully functional after install and since.

"XP SP3 does not like at least 90% of motherboards in use and for some reason it just does not like any over 5 years old".

Installed first on a 6 year old, as mentioned earlier.
No issue there either.
