I tunes import from external hard drive

Hi,
I am trying to import music saved on an external hard drive into Itunes, without success. There are two issues.
Firstly I cannot see how to import a folder at a time and have had to try and import indivdual songs. There has to be another way of doing this!
Secondly - those songs which I have imported into itunes from the external hard drive will not play unless the hard drive is still attached. It looks like only the link has been imported into itunes. Can anyone help please. It is a new laptop - vista and I downloaded the latest version of Itunes.
