Notification Area/ Missing Icons

This is getting really frustrating now!
In the notification area, I have missing icons - today, it's the volume and network.
I have trudged thro countless forums searching for a fix - right click and properties does not work because the missing icons are greyed out, so I am unable to tick to enable them.
Today, power and clock are in black and ok, network and volume are greyed - sometimes power is greyed too - it never seems to happen with the clock.
I have also tried the fix where you delete icons and pasticons in the registry - this fixes it on first reboot, then after that they're gone again.
I have also, as suggested in one of the forums, system restored to a time before it started happening - done and ok on first reboot, then back to the problem again.
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated
