Make a network partly wireless

Hi, ok this is what i was looking to do, but after searching for items on PCworld and Currys etc im doubting now whether it can actually be done.
We have a wired home network, and havent changed to wireless yet just because weve got all the wires around the house to the rooms needed and its just a bit more secure having the network wired for the majority of the time.
However, we could do with now and again making another room in the house connected to the network, especially as it would be useful now that I use my laptop a lot more. However, we dont really have a need the majority of the time to buy a wireless router and have a wireless network all the time as its only me in the house who needs a wireless one and im off at uni the majority of the time. So, is there an item that can be put onto the end of a wired network cable, or even out the back of the router that transmits the signal and creates a wireless signal? Then when wireless isnt needed, it can be removed? So generally, instead of a wire being plugged into one of the sockets on the router, we have some sort of device that takes the signal and instead of taking it through a cable, transmits it, creating a mini wireless network?
I hope ive been clear
Thanks for any help!
