Linux question

Hi, does anyone on these forums (fora?) use Linux - the Ubuntu version? If so, could you tell me how to edit the file 'google.xml' so that all instances of www.google.com are changed to www.google.co.uk?
I have located the file in "usr/share/firefox/searchplugins/ and have tried to edit it but when I go to save it it says that I cannot because I have not got permissions. Right-clicking on the file and selecting "Properties" produces a list of properties that could be changed and a terse little message that says that I am not the owner of the file, which belongs to 'root' and I can't change the properties.
There must, surely, be a way to do this? I want to change 'google.xml' because when I am in France, Google always logs onto a French version and I would prefer it to be in English.
Can anyone help, please?
Many thanks
