Local Service/Network Service - a real head spinner!!!

Right, see if anyone can understand this!!! On my desktop, in Documents and Settings, are 4 folders, Local Service.NT Authority, and ditto.000, and Network Service.NT Authority, ditto.000. My Laptop, again running XP, does not have these folders, but when I do a backup of it (using Karen's Replicator) - there they are!! . I have enabled hidden files, and done a search, but they do not seem to exist.
Can anybody shed any light on what they are and what they are doing??
