Any good small good ISP`s or VIRGIN ADSL?

Hello there, ive recently had enough of AOL and decided to move ISP, i first thought of Demon, but upon calling them several times i have never had so inept customer services that i decided not to join, so now i placed an order with Virgin media for an ADSL 8mb connetion with unlimited download cap, but i have since read some REALLY bad reviews , that there speed is awful and they slow you right down further at peak times, which is the exact reason im leaving AOL as i play alot of online games and there becoming unplayable at AOL, if Virgin are the same im gonna cancel the order before it goes through.
What i was wondering is are virgin as bad as i have read?
also can any of you tell me of a smaller ISP (as i believe these will hav better support and speeds) that are fast, with no download cap and cost less than £30 per month? or mabey a list and review site with this info on it.
