Unable to run ActiveX on required sites

Hi,
When I try to use Microsoft Update or download something from the Canon website it says ActiveX not enabled. I've checked my settings in IE Options and tried the settings to both enable and prompt but with no joy. I have also tried with my firewall turned off but again no luck.
Any help appreciated.
