This is the theory! Place the floppy disk in the drive and reboot the laptop. At some point it should either read the data from a protected part of the hard disk or ask you to insert the relevant CD. It should then rebuild everything from scratch. You will probably need to use the driver CD at some point if the Recovery system hasn't got them built in. Finally you will need to log on to Microsoft and download the HUGE number of updates that you'll need.
On the other hand, it might seem slow to you but would it do for your son 'as is'? He might be quite satisfied to use it straight away.
