It should be possible for you to remove the battery completely from your laptop and run on mains alone. Unfortunately that won't help you because even sitting on a shelf doing nothing the battery will eventually die. Leaving it in the laptop won't make it any better (or worse) it will still have a limited life of around 15 to 24 months.
