Running on battery

As I have recently purchased an Acer Aspire 3680 (and run Vista basic) I like to keep it running all the time and connected to the Internet via Broadband. We all know that the batteries on a laptop don`t last too long so my query is, if by leaving it connected to the mains all the time am I damaging the battery in any way?
