Netgear DG834GT and AOL

Hi All
I have been running the subject router and AOL for about 6 months with no snags. However I recently upgraded the router firmware and AOL, after which I cannot now log into the internet through AOL (I stop at step 2 with the following message: "[Broadband] The computer could not get an internet connection. (Error: AC-3000 0x84100116)".
I can log in through Internet Explorer and through AOL when I plug my old Broadband Modem in.
AOL aren't interested, I have tried the things on their help pages. Netgear seem to think I should lower the MTU settings in 12 point steps to 1200, which I have done to no avail. Before I phone Netgear back and spend another £?? can anyone offer me any advice please?
