new build freezing

I have built a new computer with an Novatech Motherboard Bundle Athlon X2 4200, Heatsink and Fan, 1Gb DDR2 667 RAM, AM2 nVidia Motherboard found here http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?MBB-X2421M
and an nividia 7300le pci express a420 watt power supply, and a Hitachi HCS72505 500gb hard drive,
now it keeps freezing on me windows became unusable couldn't get past loading up. now i have Ubuntu gutsy gibbon on it but still freezing on me (not as bad as windows) i thought at first it was the power supply i had a 300watt supply on it and the video card wanted 350 so changed that to 420 supply but still freezing on me any ideas folks?
