Missing or Corrupt File! HELP!

I have a compaq presario sr1000 desktop PC. It had been randomly turning itself off for weeks but i just ignored the matter until one day when i turned it on i got the message:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
From what ive read on other sites, i have an OEM-installed operating system so there is no windows XP disk (and rather stupidly i did't make any backup disks although i have now learnt my lesson). Also, none of the F keys are working appart from F1 which loads the BIOS menu thingy.
Im not fussed at all about losing any of my work i just want it to get up and running again. Also, if my computer really is beyond the point of help, would buying a copy of windows vista home edition solve the problem.
Any comments are welcome!
What do i do?!?!??!?!?
